Best Sales Tax Software 2026: 11 Tools Compared

An honest comparison of the best sales tax software in 2026: pricing models, coverage, filing, integrations, and who each tool fits, with our methodology.

Best Sales Tax Software 2026: 11 Tools Compared

Sales tax gets harder with every state, product line, and sales channel you add. Rates change, economic nexus thresholds differ by state, SaaS and digital goods are taxed one way in one state and exempt in the next, and use tax on your own purchases adds a second ledger to track. Good sales tax software takes most of that work off your team's plate. The hard part is picking the tool that fits how you actually sell.

This guide compares 11 sales tax tools, from small-business options to enterprise tax engines. It covers how each one prices, where each falls short, and why Kintsugi comes out on top for growing SaaS and ecommerce teams.

How we evaluated these tools

Kintsugi publishes this guide, and Kintsugi is one of the tools on the list. To keep the comparison useful, we held every vendor, including ourselves, to the same rules:

  • Public sources only. Competitor pricing, coverage, and features come from each vendor's own public website, checked on September 26, 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish a price, we say so instead of estimating one. Plans change often, so confirm current terms with the vendor.
  • The whole compliance workflow, not just calculation. We looked at nexus monitoring, real-time calculation, registration, filing and remittance, exemption certificates, notice handling, and international coverage.
  • Pricing model and predictability. We noted whether pricing is published, how it scales (per filing, per state, per transaction, or by order volume), and what sits behind a sales call.
  • Who it fits, and the catch. For every other tool, we name the narrow case it fits and the limitation that comes with it.

We didn't use private deal data, anonymous review quotes, or claims we couldn't confirm on a public page.

The 11 best sales tax software tools

1. Kintsugi: The best choice for growing SaaS and ecommerce teams

Kintsugi is the AI-native sales tax, VAT, and GST platform built for companies that are growing fast and can't afford for compliance to slow them down. It runs the whole workflow in one place: exposure monitoring, product classification, registration, real-time calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificates, and state notices. You stop stitching together a calculator, a filing service, and a spreadsheet of deadlines.

  • Start free, pay as you file: The Free plan includes global exposure monitoring, nexus threshold alerts, AI product categorization, address validation, and CSV imports, with no credit card. Starter begins at $75 per filing or registration, with no per-state subscription, and adds automated registrations, filings, remittance, refunds and amendments, a virtual mailbox for state notices, onboarding assistance, and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses. Premium is custom, with volume discounts. See pricing.
  • Global from day one: US sales tax plus Canada, the EU, the UK, and 100+ countries on Premium, so expanding abroad doesn't mean switching platforms.
  • Connects to your stack: 60+ integrations, including no-code connections to Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee, and BigCommerce. On Premium, real-time invoice calculation for QuickBooks, NetSuite, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 runs on Kintsugi's tax engine, powered by Vertex, for enterprise-grade accuracy. See integrations.
  • Backed by a guarantee: Premium adds dedicated onboarding, SLA-backed support, back filing with voluntary disclosure agreement (VDA) options, bulk exemption certificate management, and the Kintsugi Guarantee: if our calculation or filing error leads to penalties or interest, we pay it.
  • Use tax included: Use tax is managed alongside sales tax, so purchases don't need a second process.

Best for: SaaS and ecommerce companies expanding across states or countries that want one platform, predictable per-filing pricing, and support that answers.

2. Avalara

Avalara sells AvaTax for real-time calculation of sales and use tax, VAT, and several specialty tax types, with filing, exemption certificate management, and registration services around it.

  • Pricing: Published plans start at $69 per state per month ($699 per state per year) with Streamlined Sales Tax services, or $79 per state per month ($799 per state per year) for Core Compliance. Both are only for companies under $50M in revenue; above that, pricing is a custom quote. Registration is billed separately at $403 per location, and business license guidance is priced separately too.
  • What that adds up to: In 10 states, Core Compliance costs $9,480 a year billed monthly (10 × $79 × 12) or $7,990 billed annually (10 × $799). Registering in those states adds $4,030 (10 × $403), so year one on annual billing comes to $12,020 before any add-ons.
  • Implementation and support: The per-state price includes Standard Implementation (chat with an implementation agent) and Standard Support (online cases, a 24-hour first response on weekdays, no phone). Guided Implementation and the Priority and Enterprise support plans, which add phone, live chat, and faster response times, are sold separately (Avalara support plans).
  • Coverage: 12,000+ US sales and use tax jurisdictions and 190+ countries.
  • Integrations: Avalara lists 1,400+ integrations, but fewer than 80 are built by Avalara; the rest are built and maintained by third-party partners.

Watch for: Avalara prices every state separately, so its total cost is harder to predict than per-filing pricing. Each state you add brings another subscription and another registration fee. Crossing $50M in revenue, or adding VAT or GST, moves you to a custom quote. Customers who switched to Kintsugi from Avalara tell us they dealt with poor support and fees they didn't expect. For a side-by-side view, see Avalara vs. Kintsugi.

Best for: Enterprises above $50M in revenue with budget for per-state pricing, separately sold implementation and support tiers, and a custom quote for VAT or GST.

3. TaxJar

TaxJar, acquired by Stripe in 2021, focuses on US sales tax for online sellers. It offers real-time calculation, economic nexus tracking, reporting, and automated filing through AutoFile.

  • Pricing: Starter is $39/month and includes two AutoFile credits a year ($50 per extra filing). Professional is $99/month with four AutoFile credits ($55 per extra filing), phone callback support, and a customer success manager. Annual billing saves 10% or more.
  • Coverage: US only.
  • Integrations: Amazon, Shopify, WooCommerce, and a developer API. TaxJar no longer supports new NetSuite integrations, and its Stripe integration is for existing users only.
  • What changed since the Stripe acquisition: Starter went from $19 to $39 a month. Included AutoFile credits dropped from 4 to 2 a year on Starter and from 12 to 4 on Professional, and Professional at 10,000 orders a month went from $849 to $1,999 (before, after). Extra filings rose from $30 to $50 on Starter and from $35 to $55 on Professional. The support SLA promises email replies within 2 business days on Starter and 1 on Professional. More in what the Stripe acquisition changed.

Watch for: Plans are priced by order volume, and filing costs grow once the included AutoFile credits run out. International VAT and GST need a separate tool. By contrast, Kintsugi offers a Free plan, per-filing pricing from $75, 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses, and integrations with both Stripe and NetSuite. See TaxJar vs. Kintsugi and our roundup of TaxJar alternatives.

Best for: US-only sellers with low filing volume who can live without VAT and GST support and with paying per filing once the included credits run out.

4. Stripe Tax

Stripe Tax is built into Stripe Billing, Invoicing, Checkout, and Payments. It calculates and collects tax where you're registered, and monitors thresholds based on your Stripe activity.

  • Pricing: 0.5% per transaction for no-code integrations, or 50¢ per transaction through the API, in jurisdictions where you're registered. Stripe also sells registration and filing bundles (Tax Complete) starting at $90/month, with filing delivered through partners.
  • Coverage: Tax collection in 100+ countries.
  • Integrations: Stripe products; other channels need their own solution.

Watch for: Percentage-based pricing grows with revenue, and sales outside Stripe (a Shopify store, marketplaces, or invoices from an ERP) aren't covered. See Stripe Tax vs. Kintsugi.

Best for: Businesses that bill only through Stripe, will never sell through another channel, and are willing to pay a percentage of every transaction.

5. Anrok

Anrok is built for SaaS and modern tech companies. It combines global exposure monitoring, real-time calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificates, and an AI assistant called Anrok Atlas.

  • Pricing: Starter is $100 per market, per month, where a market is one jurisdiction (each US state counts as one). High-volume sellers may pay additional fees. Custom plans add e-invoicing, multi-entity support, advanced integrations, and priority support.
  • Coverage: 11,000+ US jurisdictions and 150+ countries.
  • Integrations: Billing and ERP systems used by SaaS companies, including Stripe, Chargebee, Zuora, Recurly, NetSuite, and QuickBooks, plus HR systems for employee nexus.

Watch for: Per-market pricing adds up as you register in more states and countries. For a three-way view, see Avalara vs. Anrok vs. Kintsugi.

Best for: SaaS teams willing to pay per market, every month, as they register in more states and countries.

6. Numeral

Numeral offers sales tax filing and registration as a service for ecommerce and SaaS brands, with free nexus monitoring as the entry point.

  • Pricing: Monitoring is free. Professional is $75 per filing plus $150 per state registration, with autofile, autoregister, a virtual mailbox, AI product classification, and exemption certificate management. Enterprise is custom.
  • Coverage: All US states; 90+ countries on Enterprise.
  • Integrations: Shopify, Stripe, Amazon, QuickBooks, NetSuite, and 35+ more.

Watch for: Global VAT and GST and the tax engine API sit on the custom Enterprise plan. See Numeral vs. Kintsugi.

Best for: US-focused sellers who don't need global VAT and GST or a tax engine API outside a custom Enterprise contract.

7. Zamp

Zamp positions itself as a managed sales tax service, pairing software with dedicated tax expertise for registrations, filing, remittance, and notices.

  • Pricing: A free plan includes a one-time nexus analysis, product taxability review, and an expert consultation. Zamp doesn't publish prices for its paid US or US + Canada plans; pricing follows a sales assessment.
  • Coverage: US, with Canadian GST, HST, PST, and QST on its U.S. + Canada plan.

Watch for: Without published prices, you'll need a quote to compare total cost. See Zamp vs. Kintsugi.

Best for: US and Canadian sellers comfortable with quote-only pricing and no coverage beyond North America.

8. TaxCloud

TaxCloud is a US-only tool tied to the Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program.

  • Pricing: Starter and Premium plans are priced by order volume. A separate filing service starts at $39/month. In the 24 SST member states, eligible sellers can get registration, calculation, filing, and remittance at no cost through the SST program.
  • Coverage: US only.
  • Features: Nexus monitoring across all 50 states, return-ready reports, and exemption certificate management; Premium adds real-time calculation, ERP integrations, and API access.

Watch for: US only, and real-time calculation, ERP integrations, and API access require the Premium plan.

Best for: US-only sellers with most of their obligations in SST states and no plans to sell abroad.

9. Quaderno

Quaderno is designed for online businesses selling digital products and services across borders. It calculates sales tax, VAT, and GST, monitors thresholds, and issues compliant invoices.

  • Pricing: Plans run from $24/month (Hobby, 25 transactions) to $124/month (Growth, 2,500 transactions), with custom Enterprise pricing above that.
  • Coverage: Global sales tax, VAT, and GST.

Watch for: Each plan caps monthly transactions, and going over moves you to the next tier.

Best for: Low-volume digital product sellers who can live within monthly transaction caps.

10. Vertex

Vertex O Series is an enterprise indirect tax engine that centralizes sales, use, and VAT calculation across ERP, procurement, ecommerce, and billing systems.

  • Pricing: Not published.
  • Integrations: Certified integrations with SAP, Oracle, Coupa, Shopify, and Microsoft Dynamics 365.

Watch for: Enterprise deployments typically involve a significant implementation project.

Best for: Large enterprises with an in-house tax department and budget for a significant implementation project.

11. Sovos

Sovos automates sales and use tax calculation, exemptions, reporting, and filing, with managed filing services for larger organizations.

  • Pricing: Not published.
  • Coverage: 12,000+ US jurisdictions.

Watch for: Pricing isn't published, so you'll need a quote to compare total cost.

Best for: Large, regulated organizations comfortable with quote-only pricing.

Small businesses

For a small business, the biggest risks are missing a nexus threshold and paying for more software than you need. Start with free exposure monitoring so you know where you owe tax before you buy filing. Then compare how each tool charges once you're registered: per filing, per state, per transaction, or a flat monthly plan. A tool that's cheap in two states can get expensive in ten.

Don't forget use tax

Sales tax is what you collect when you sell. Use tax is what you owe when you buy taxable goods or software and the vendor didn't charge the correct tax, which is common with out-of-state SaaS vendors. If you buy a lot of software or equipment across state lines, ask each vendor whether it tracks purchases and files use tax, or whether you'll need a separate process.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • In how many states and countries do we have nexus today, and where will we in 12 to 24 months?
  • Which systems hold our order and billing data: Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee, NetSuite, QuickBooks, marketplaces, or a custom stack?
  • Does the tool register us, file, and remit, or only calculate?
  • How are exemption certificates collected, validated, and renewed?
  • Who handles notices from state tax authorities?
  • What happens to cost as we add states, filings, or transactions?
  • Is there an implementation fee or an annual contract?
  • If the software makes an error, who pays the penalties and interest?

Red flags

  • Pricing you can't estimate without a sales call, or fees that appear only after onboarding.
  • Calculation-only products sold as full compliance.
  • No clear owner for registrations, filings, or state notices.
  • Weak support for how you sell, such as SaaS taxability, marketplaces, or international sales.
  • Long implementation timelines for a business that needs to be compliant this quarter.

FAQs

What is the best sales tax software?

For most growing SaaS and ecommerce companies, Kintsugi. It covers monitoring, registration, calculation, filing, and notices end to end, with published pricing, 60+ integrations, and coverage in 100+ countries. The alternatives each come with a catch: Avalara prices every state separately, Stripe Tax only covers sales billed through Stripe, and TaxJar is US-only and has raised prices and cut included filings since the Stripe acquisition.

What is the best sales tax software for a small business?

Start with Kintsugi's Free plan, which includes global exposure monitoring and nexus threshold alerts, so you know where you're obligated before paying for filing. Numeral also offers free monitoring, while Zamp's free plan is a one-time nexus analysis. After that, compare per-filing, per-state, and per-transaction pricing against the number of states you file in.

How much does sales tax software cost?

Published prices in September 2026 range from free monitoring plans to $24 to $124/month (Quaderno), $39 to $99/month plus filing credits (TaxJar), $75 per filing (Kintsugi and Numeral), $100 per market per month (Anrok), and 0.5% per transaction (Stripe Tax no-code). Avalara's published plans start at $69 to $79 per state per month for companies under $50M in revenue, so 10 states on Core Compliance run $7,990 to $9,480 a year plus $4,030 in registrations. Vertex and Sovos don't publish pricing.

For comparison, Kintsugi's paid plans start at $75 per filing or registration, with no per-state subscription. In the same 10 states, registering starts at $750. Filings depend on how often each state has you file: 40 quarterly returns a year start at $3,000, and 120 monthly returns start at $9,000. That puts year one at $3,750 or more for quarterly filers and $9,750 or more for monthly filers, against $12,020 for Avalara's Core Compliance on annual billing.

Does sales tax software file returns for me?

Many tools do, but not all. Kintsugi, Numeral, Zamp, Anrok, and TaxJar (through AutoFile) file and remit returns. Some tools only calculate tax or prepare reports, so confirm filing and remittance are included before you buy.

Is sales tax software worth it?

For most businesses selling in more than a few states, yes. Manual compliance means tracking thousands of US tax jurisdictions, each state's nexus rules, and product taxability. A missed registration or filing can lead to back taxes, penalties, and interest that cost far more than the software.
